Situated in the up-and-coming Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the Bayard School Lofts was a historic restoration of an 1874 schoolhouse into 11 market-rate apartments. Since the Bayard School building is on the National Register of Historic Places, this restoration followed Department of Interior standards to meet Historic Tax Credit requirements. In its past life, the building had been a schoolhouse, a food processing plant, and eventually offices before being abandoned for almost twenty years. Despite the enormous obstacles and restrictive site, every detail was painstakingly revived to its former glory, including handmade corbels, entry door sidelites, trim, and custom oversized windows in the original openings, along with modern features like bike storage, quartz countertops, and stainless steel appliances. In addition to new roofing and insulation, brand new MEP systems bring energy efficiency to this historic project. The end result is a true gem that adds charm, beauty, and value to the community.
